 | Libya Rally 2012: New date for 2012 - will the Rally start in Tunisia or Libya?.
|
2011 has been a difficult year for all the fans of rally driving in the Sahara desert. The various revolutions in the Arab world lead to the cancellation of many rallies/raids all over the Magreb and even long distance events like Heroes Legend didn’t find enough participants to start.
Although for most organizers and participants these revolutions were a nightmare, for the inhabitants of the affected countries they were necessary and luckily had positive outcome. So now we have news - news about the licence-free "Libya Rally".
"Shortly after the force majeure which forced us to postpone Libya Rally 2011 we made you a promise" said Gert Duson from the "Libya Rally". "Those who didn’t claim back their registration fees, would get a full registration to a high-level, well-organsed rally one year later. We want to re-confirm our promise. In March 2012 a new edition of "Libya Rally" will take place!"
What was considered impossible two months ago seems maybe possible now or in the near future: Rally-driving in the Libyan desert in 2012. The war started about 6 months ago. Today the country is liberated and fighting is nearly finished. The new government will - hopefully in a few days - declare the official liberation of the country.
"So yes, we are considering returning to Libya in March 2012" Duson said. "But safety first! No, we will NOT take any risk. In January 2012 the team will be preparing a "plan B" and will be spending the entire month in the south of Tunisia to organise a well-prepared, high-standard desert rally, write road books, find bivouacs, etc based on the network, know-how and former roadbooks of a famous German rally."
"The start would be given on the Island of Djerba, to where you can buy cheap charter tickets from 50 Euros onwards. Only if we are 100 % safe and we get the full support of the new government, we’ll consider Libya as our playground."
Libya Rally 2012 will roughly take place from 19 till 25 March. "It’s a bit later than usually, but many of the participants are doing the Dakar-rally in South-America and only get their vehicles back around the end of February" Duson told. More info will soon be published [ www.libya-rally.com ].
