Libya Rally Raid: The Belgians found the camp on their own

The camp of Libya Rally Raid heaved a sigh of relief: The Mercedes G of Belgian duo Bernerd Dhont/Johan De Bruijn reached the camp finally in early evening - exhausted but uninjured. "Because of the sand storm the complete electronics of the car broke down" told us Dhont, "then our GPS failed, too."

In the afternoon they had a little bit of luck: "Suddenly there was a peep and for some minutes the GPS showed our position" says Dhont, ’short after that the signal stopped. It was like a wonder. With this information we could orientate ourselves - we were in fact cca. 40 km from the actual track. Then we drove in the direction of the camp. After a while we found the traces of two cars which were also in the same direction. Later we found out that actually those were the traces of Eisenmann and Asmus."

The crew had double luck, as they were also running out of water. "We had enough with us, but in the end it became a bit tight. The last two sips of water we drank on the road just before the camp’ says co-driver De Bruijn. Team boss Hans Baur feeled relieved - he was looking for "his boys" all day long. The Belgians received a very warm welcome as they finally drove in the camp. The organisation also felt relieved: ’Nothing is worse than missing a participant" says race director Marco Bölling.

After the return of the Belgian duo tomorrow’s stage will start as planned. It will be another dune stage to "Camp Aania". If Dhont will start again, is still a question: "We drink one more beer, go to bed as early as possible and make our decision tomorrow morning’ says the driver. If they withdraw, only three car teams (Eisenmann, Asmus and Kessler) would remain in race. After a break also the two Unimogs will take the start.
