Northern Forest: Alexey Berkut takes the lead at Russian Winter Baja.

After the start ceremony at the central square of the Sosnovo settlement, the crews headed to the first superspecial stage of the rally. This stage is also the rally prologue. The weather was good for the competitors. The soft cold weather made the roads surface very rough and hard, the morning haze keeping almost until the end of the stage prevented the sun to blind the racers.

The best result on the super-special stage was shown by Alexey Berkut, the leader of AMK Dinamo FSO team. Flying the stage with the average speed of over 120 km/h, Berkut was faster than Latvian Janis Naglis, who was second on the stage, by over half of a minute. The leader of the “Nart-Time” racing team, Ruslan Misikov was third on the stage, slower than Naglis by only 3 seconds. The same 3 seconds slower was Dmitry Pavlov, being 4-th on the stage and 1-st in the “standart” T2 class.

The fifth and sixth times were for the french crews of Dominique Hosieaux (4th in T1) and Christian Lavieille (2nd in T2). The fastest driver in the national class was Yuri Borovikov, being also 7th in the absolute classification. Eights was the current classic rally champion of Russia, Alexander Zheludov, being also third in T2.

Unfortunately, the crew of Leonid Novitsky could not start on the super-special stage today. Leonid’s Mitsubishi refused to start in the morning and the crew got the penalty time putting them on the last line of the protocol in almost 25 minutes from the leader. Tomorrow the crews will compete on three rounds of snowy forest roads with overall distance of about 240 km in the surroundings of the Gromovo settlement and the Ladoga lake.
