Northern Forest: Will it be a winter baja only in snow mud?.

The most important characteristic of the Northern Forest Baja is its unusual terrain: Snow and ice. Last year the crews competed in snowy landscapes and at a temperature of minus 30 degrees but now it seems like they have snow mud instead of ice. The weather in the region is much clamer than usual - sometimes even above zero degree which a bit like ’summer’ in this part of Europe.

Although the Baltic Sea and the port of St. Petersburg is still frozen, enabling us even to walk on the ’water’, the lasting warm weather made the snow in the city melting away quickly and leaving the streets covered with slippery mud. The ’real’ baja will take part aboutt 200 km to the North in the forests close to the border with Finland and maybe there remained more snow.

’In the past days it was also warmer in the region of Igora’ - told us Sergey Lebedev, logistics anager of the rally. "We hope for the best, otherwise we may have a muddy event which doesn’t make things easier." Snow and ice can be easily dealt with with studded tires, last year Christian Lavieille compared it to ’driving on gravel.’ But having snow mud on the tracks can make thing dangerous. Studded tires are not usable under these circumstances and normal tires can lead to risky situations on frozen parts.

On Thursday night the temperatures finally sank under zero degrees again and even it started snowing - so we are really hope for a good cold weather for the upcoming days...
