Orpi Maroc: Interviews after stage 1 Erfoud-Erfoud

What they said: Cars Category

Giniel de Villiers (VW Race Touareg II) : "It was an ideal stage for us as we know the terrain so well. On the second loop we improved our time by more than two minutes and a half, but that wasn't enough to be ahead of Carlos. Being the opener tomorrow probably won't be ideal…"

Carlos Sainz (VW Race Touareg II) : "We lost a bit of time in Roma's dust in the first run of the loop. For the second run everything went fine. Above all we must be in the leading bunch. For the moment things are going perfectly."

Jean-Louis Schlesser (Buggy Ford) : "It was a stage that was made for us. We missed winning the first loop for a minor navigation error. We went flat out in the second run but just couldn't catch up with the Volkswagens."

Stéphane Peterhansel (Mitsubishi Pajero) : "We lost a bit of time finding the way on the first loop. A small navigation error, a missed stamp at a CP. De Villiers careered up behind us and we let him go past. With our extra 80 kgs of fuel it was completely impossible to follow him. There's no escaping it: on this terrain, a Volkswagen does just better than our cars that are the same as on the last Dakar. It's going to be very lively!"

What they said: Motocycle Category

Marc Coma (KTM Repsol) : "I'm very pleased with this first day. I made the most of my starting position to carve out some time for myself in the first loop. Then I stepped up the speed in the second run. It was dangerous but full of lessons for me."

David Casteu (KTM Gauloises) : "It started off very fast. You weren't allowed to make any mistakes. I'm pleased not to have lost too much time to Marc. Cyril didn't make a big hit today but I think he'll soon be leading again!"

Cyril Despres (KTM Gauloises) : "I'm above all relieved to have finished this stage without feeling the slightest pain in my shoulder or in my wrist. I feel completely fit. I've spent three difficult months and got back the feelings that I was hoping for. The new bike is amazing and I hope I'll smoothly be upping the pace."

Isidre Esteve (KTM Gauloises) : "The shock absorber fell apart in a dip at km 55 on the first loop. I had to ride 80kms at a slow pace. Better it happening here though than on the Dakar. If the overall lead is unimaginable now, I can still hope to win some stages."
