Orpi Maroc: VW Debut in Morocco Rally with Carlos Sousa.

Phoenix Sport will be contesting the 2007 Dakar Rally as a Volkswagen semi-factory team. Prior to that, in the Morocco Rally from 31 May to 05 June, the third round of the FIA Cross Country Rally World Cup, the racing team based in Meuspath near the Nürburgring (Germany), headed by team owner Ernst Moser, will be fielding a Volkswagen Race Touareg 2, as well. As the driver the Portuguese Carlos Sousa (41), winner of the 2003 Word Cup, has been confirmed. In Morocco, the German Andreas Schulz, two-time Dakar winner in the employ of Volkswagen Motorsport, will be taking the co-driver’s seat in the cockpit of the Race Touareg alongside Carlos Sousa.

"The Volkswagen Race Touareg will be fielded by Phoenix Sport under the team’s own direction but in close cooperation with Volkswagen Motorsport, particularly with regard to technical aspects," says Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. "Our collaboration with Ernst Moser and his Phoenix team was very good already during the last Dakar Rally when they provided support for Mark Miller’s Race Touareg. We know that with Phoenix the Race Touareg is in good hands."

In 1999 Ernst Moser founded the Phoenix team and, ever since then, has been primarily involved in touring car racing. This year Phoenix contests the DTM (Deutsches Tourenwagen Masters) as an Audi factory team and, by fielding the Race Touareg, now intensifies the collaboration with the Volkswagen corporation. "The Dakar Rally and cross country rallying are a unique challenge. We look forward to this task and our cooperation with Volkswagen Motorsport," says Ernst Moser. "The signing of Carlos Sousa means that we’ve got a seasoned ‘Dakar’ driver on board."

Initial plans are for Team Phoenix Sport to enter one Race Touareg 2 under the application of "Team Lagos" for Carlos Sousa. "There’s a possibility, though, that we may be fielding a second Race Touareg in the Dakar Rally," says Ernst Moser. "After all, there are many top-flight drivers available, more than competitive cars."
