Pharaons 2006: A difficult start for Team Nissan Aventure.

The Pharaons Rally got underway yesterday morning, in front of the magnificent Sphinx on the Giza plateau, 20 km from Cairo city centre. With the pyramids as a backdrop, all those taking part in this ninth edition set off for seven days of intensive racing. Team Nissan Aventure had a few problems out on the trails this morning, but nothing too disastrous for a first day of racing.

Just a few kilometres into the first special stage, between Cairo and Baharija, the Nissan Aventure crew of Christian Lavieille and Arnaud Debron had their first scare. Luckily, the incident will not have any lasting effect on their hopes of finishing such a difficult rally.

Christian Lavieille is still full of confidence: "Starting from the 8th kilometre of the special stage (which was 340 km long), we had a some engine misfires. It was getting more and more difficult to continue. Just four kilometres from the service park, we had to stop. We found out that a sensor was broken; I tried to repair it by adjusting the connectors. Finally, we were able to get going and to reach the service area. The mechanics solved the problem, but this evening, we have lost around 13 minutes. The special stage was not much fun for us, it was more suitable for the buggies. It’s quite hard to keep going with a T2 car on this sort of terrain. At the end, the sand was quite soft, which didn’t make things any easier. We are beginning to notice the heat, and this factor will become more noticeable as we head south. Anyway, we have managed to limit the damage today, and there is still a long way to go".

As far as the navigation was concerned, there were no significant problems today for Arnaud Debron: "There were no navigational problems today. The special stage was quite monotonous. This engine cut-outs cost us quite a lot of time, but we’ve emerged without too much damage. The race is only just starting, and as a matter of principal, we never look at the classification on the first day".
