Pharaons 2006: Christian Lavielle again leading T2 Category.

The stage between Farafra and Baharija was once again a feast for the eyes. Driving along the edge of the White Desert, the remaining competitors in this 9th edition of the Pharaons Rally were able to take full advantage of the scenery. Christian Lavieille and Arnaud Debron enjoyed their day and set another fine performance in their Nissan Pathfinder.

Christian was smiling when he arrived at the Baharija bivouac: "The first special stage was very fast but on soft sand. I was very pleased with today´s tyre choice. The G3 tyres proved to be very efficient. We put less strain on the vehicle, allowing us to go into 4th gear without wearing out the mechanical parts. The Pathfinder is much more efficient on this sort of terrain with the G3 tyres, and it saves the chassis on the long straights. On the second timed stage, there were a lot more rocks, and we took care in order to avoid punctures. Arnaux was particularly happy as there was plenty of navigation today! And it was far from straight-forward. Once more, the scenery was magnificent, with huge limestone mushrooms in the middle of the desert. The end of the stage was nearly the same as two years ago. Overall, we´re still fifth, and we have a good lead in T2. All is going well!"

Arnaud Debron was also smiling today, as today´s stage allowed him to fully use his navigating skills: "At the start of the first stage, while we were following both the headings and the road-book scrupulously, we suddenly found ourselves without any tracks to be seen. It was great! I really had fun on the second stage. You had to follow the road book very closely, as there were few headings or GPS points. It allowed us to avoid quite a few traps, and we didn´t get lost. The terrain was also very varied. That´s the kind of stage I enjoy!"

André Dessoude agreed that the choice made by his driver had paid off today: "Yesterday evening, Christian decided to set off with G3 tyres. I must say that this choice proved to be the right one. It allowed them to take the strain off the vehicle, and was perfect in terms of clever race management. I would have never doubted it where Christian is concerned!"

Tomorrow, the rally caravan will head west towards the Siwa oasis, not far from the Libyan border. Over a 375 km special stage, the competitors will be faced with another varied route, with a mix of sand, dunes, rocks and plenty of off-track racing.
