Pharaons 2006: What they said after Stage 1

Cars

Yvan Muller (F), Nissan Dessoude: "My approach to this first stage was to finish fast. At the beginning, I had to get used to the ground, to better visualize and understand it. After that, I increased regularly the pace. I have a race next week-end in Valencia, and I don t want to take any risk. The car is globally satisfying, even if several details still need to be optimised. I hope that the second day of the race will offer me the chance to continue my tests". (Muller is only testing two days of the Rally because of his Seat Touringcar Race in Spain).

Jose-Luis Monterde (E), BMW X5CC: "We broke up the rear transmission twice, which implied a consequent waste of time. Otherwise, the stage started very well, with the buggy from Shmakov always within our reach. But this rally is just starting and who knows what can happen during the next days".

Christian Lavieille (F), Nissan Pathfinder: "It was a bad day for us. We have wasted a lot of time until the assistance point. A defaulting ignition sensor was causing engine misfiring. After that, the gear box showed some weaknesses with a reluctant third ratio".

Bikes

Jordi Viladoms (E), KTM 660 Rally: "It is my first victory of a stage in an African rally. This means that I am progressing in this discipline requiring a lot of experience. By starting with the 4th position today, I knew that I had really good chances to make a good result. After having joined David and Marc at the refuelling CP, I knew that I could make it. At the finish line, one single second of difference is nothing, but it means a lot for me. It is a great satisfaction!"

Marc Coma (E), KTM 660 Rally: "I drove at my own pace during the first half of the stage. After that, I increased the rhythm while staying careful. Without the problems that David had to suffer today, he could have followed me very easily because they were no real difficulties. We are here to prepare the Dakar, and I have to say that the team is starting very well".

Francisco Lopez (CHI), Honda 450: "My muffler broke up at the early beginning of the race, forcing me to decrease my speed in order to preserve my engine".

David Casteu (F), KTM 660: "Everything was fine. I was riding ahead with Coma and Viladoms. 40 km before the arrival post, my bike stopped suddenly. My carburetor was blocked and let the fuel to flow completely out. Since I was the first to refuel, I think that I got all the dust from the refuelling system. Anyway, I have received fuel from all the other competitors, to whom I am really grateful. Afterwards, I had to disassemble the carburetion system in order to clean it and wait until the arrival of Lazard and Prohens to change my battery and finally start again. Due to the irritation, I fell down few kilometres further. The rally is just at its start, but I realize that we have to deserve it before to obtain the world title".
