Pharaons 2006: Yvan Muller sets a promising first time.

| |
| The first of two test days programmed within the Pharaons Rally went rather well for Yvan Muller and his Nissan Dessoude prototype. Setting the second-fastest time of the special stage, the driver from the Alsace made a successful debut in this motorsport category, and had an opportunity to discover something of what awaits him on the next Dakar Rally.
Driving with Fabian Lurquin for these two days in Egypt, Yvan got to grips with the category as he covered the kilometres: "The first minutes behind the wheel during the special stages brought home just how much rally raids shake up the crew members, like being in a spin drier. Moreover, another problem occurs over such long distances - answering calls of nature - the last fifty kilometres were a real nightmare! More seriously, this first stage was a real learning experience. I chose to gradually build up the pace, without taking any risks but driving sufficiently fast to get used to the terrain, the notes, the directions and the pace you need to set during the race. The vehicle is a good basis on which to prepare for the Dakar. There are a few small things which can be improved, but I am confident. The route was fast, and our set-up proved to be quite efficient. We’ll work on the car this evening to prepare for tomorrow’s stage, and to test some new settings. That is why we are here, and there is no pressure on us as far as results are concerned. We set the second-fastest time today, which is good, but that is not the most important thing in our minds."
André Dessoude is following the progress of his Prototype with interest, and appeared satisfied with this first day: "Yvan approaches all he does with a professional attitude. He is learning to read the terrain while adapting to the road-book and the notes. He went progressively faster on the special stage, while remaining very ‘clean’. It is much more useful to Yvan to take part in a race than just to concentrate on ‘traditional’ test sessions. All the conditions are in place so that he has a real feeling for this category. I think we will be able to do some good work over these two days."
