Pharaons Rally: 347 kilometres around the hidden oasis

Tackled directly or through a loop like today during the 4th leg of the Pharaons Rally, the erg of Siwa, at the border with Lybia, keeps its magic. A real ocean of dunes in which it is particularly difficult to distinguish the right mark to follow. At this kind of game, only Jordi Viladoms (KTM/Repsol) in bike and the duo Holowzcyc-Fortin (Nissan Pickup Overdrive) in car managed to play their game profitably and to close successfully this loop of 347 km around the hidden oasis.

For a completely off-track stage, three elements help for the naviguation: the roadbook, rather brief today but containing the main information, the GPS for the cap to follow to reach the nect CP, and finally, the trail of the competitors ahead. Generally, around 80% of the peloton base their navigation on this last element, what could lead to unexpected results. Actually, for a stage as today, where the marks of the day are merging with the ones of the previous day, everything can become more complicated... In this case, without knowing the basics of navigation, without the required experience, to find his way is turning to a gamble. Then if you are unlucky, the situation can shift quickly... That is exactly what happened today, at the very beginning of the stage, where whole groups of competitors have trusted wrong marks.

After having opened the track with his teammate Jordi Viladoms (KTM/Repsol) and the Chilean Francisco Lopez (Honda 450), Marc Coma (KTM/Repsol) led the race and imposed his pace according to his inspiration of the day, bringing the full caravan of the rally in his trail. Increasing the rythm at the end of the leg to prevent the Norwegian Ullevalseter (KTM) to come back, the great Catalan drove his young teammate to his third victory of a stage of the world championship. Fourth today, behind Ullevalseter, ‘Chaleco’ Lopez can still think of a place on the final podium and consolidate his position of leader in the 450cc category. In the same category, Polli (KTM) and Pain (Yamaha) have closed the timed effort with a difference of less than 4 minutes betwen them. Thanks to a safe strategy, the Italian Matteo Graziani (KTM) is well attached to his leader position in the production bikes category.

Starting this morning with a lead of about one hour on his closest aopponents, Christian Lavieille and François Borsotto (Nissan Pickup Dessoude) have chosen a more relax approach of the day, concentrating their efforts on testing some settings or actions for the next Dakar, such as the compulsory assistance stop. This has been at the advantage of Krzysztof Holowzcyc and Jean-Marc Fortin (Nissan Pickup Overdrive) who, except for a small mistake of navigation early morning, reached the two French less than hundred kilometers from the arrival.

In order to clinch victory and position themselves at the second place of the cars ranking. Right behind the two ‘rockets’, the Bowler Wildcat of Patrick Sireyjol and Jérome Pélichet thusGproceeding with their tight duel, right ahead of the Chevrolet Pickup of Carlo De Gavardo and Jean Brucy, still victims of gearbox troubles. Sixth of this stage with their buggy coming from the workshop of the famous Hervé Cotel, the Egyptians Abou Youssef and Mahmoud Ezzeldin perfectly settled within the top 5 of the general classification, their original aim before start from the pyramids.
