Pharaons Rally: Christian Lavieille crowned at the foot of the Sphinx...

This 10th edition of the Rally of the Pharaohs proved to be a momentous occasion, as it marked the first-ever overall win on four wheels for Christian Lavieille, former Endurance World Champion on two…

Having won the World Cup for Cross Country Rallies in the Production category last year, with Team Dessoude and a Nissan Pathfinder, Christian has now climbed another step in the rally-raid hierarchy.

Team Dessoude claimed its fourth win in the Rally of the Pharaohs, already won by the team from Saint Lô is 1998 with Giorgio Beccaris, in 2000 with Grégoire de Mévius and in 2003 with Yves Loubet and a Nissan Pickup 03. A few months before the Dakar, this success is a good sign.

Congratulations as well to Carole Montillet and Mélanie Suchet, who finished the event in 7th place overall. The week was a rich learning experience for the former skiers, who are determined to see the Rose Lake near Dakar in January 2008.

The 2007 Egyptian campaign has definitely been a success for Team Dessoude ! This last timed stage between Baharija and Cairo may well have been the most stressful for the Lavieille-Borsotto crew.

Listening out from start to finish for any distress calls from their Nissan Navara, they did not fail the initial mission they had been given : to continue to test the suspension of their vehicle. Stopping once more at the service
area, they nevertheless claimed another stage win, as well as the cherry on the cake, the overall victory…

Words from the winner : « There always has to be a first win, and I am happy that is should take place here, where I won the World title in the T2 category last year. Egypt is never an easy rally, as proved by what happened to our main rival, Krysztof Holowczyc.

It’s a shame he was not able to reach the end of the event. We started this morning with a full tank, in order to put ourselves in true Dakar configuration. We stopped at CP2 to disconnect the roll bar, and to validate a few details, while remaining attentive for any suspicious noises until the end.

I am really very pleased with this result for the whole team, who have been working very hard on the car. My thanks to them and to André Dessoude, who placed his trust in us ! We did not have the slightest technical problems
here, just like in Tunisia. Our aim now is to have a good Dakar ! »

Smiling brightly, François Borsotto did not hide his delight : « This is my first time in this rally, and I’m on the top of the podium…it’s great ! I am really happy. This rally is both difficult and dangerous, but Christian did not make the slightest mistake.

We get on perfectly well in the car, and he trusts me. We really work well together. We still have to finalise the preparation of our Nissan Navara for the Dakar, but I am happy with this result for the whole team and for André Dessoude. »

André Dessoude has good reason to be satisfied with this week spent in the land of the Pharaohs. Not only did he claim an overall win, the fourth for his team on this event, but he has also made progress with the Nissan Navara 05 :

«I am pleased with the work accomplished by the whole team. We did a fine race with Christian, having no problems at all on the Navara. We have made progress with the suspension, and in terms of reliability. All this work is satisfactory in terms of preparing for the Dakar. We really didn’t waste our time !

The ‘girls’ also had an exemplary race. They have gained experience, and did not have any major technical problems. As they change driver frequently, both of them have made progress in navigation. They form a very homogeneous team.

The next big event is the Dakar in January, but before then, we will be finishing the season in Portugal, where Miguel Barbosa, in the Nissan Navara 05, has already secured the national title, with three events remaining ! »

Last but not least, the smiles of Carole Montillet and Mélanie Suchet on the podium were a sight to see ! The two former skiers finished the event in 7th position. A fine performance for two quasi-debutantes :

« It was really great ! We’ve had a fantastic week. We’ve made progress in driving, in navigation but also in our mechanical skills. I think that all this experience will be extremely useful on the Dakar.

We’ve changed car, and getting used to the Nissan Pathfinder T1 was perhaps easier than we had imagined. First and foremost, we are pleased that we finished all even legs of this event, and to finish 7th overall is really great.

Our thanks to the whole team and their helpfulness, and especially to André Dessoude for all his good advice. Now, we’re heading for the Dakar, and we need to get ready ! »

And so an event finishes in the best possible way for Team Dessoude !
