Por las Pampas: Alphand won the stage; the bikes start tomorrow.

Luc Alphand (Mitsubishi Montero Evo) was fastest on Stage 1 of "Por Las Pampas Rally - Patagonia Atacama" among the cars, while the bikes could not start due to the bad weather conditions which made it complicated to get to the start for several riders.

The stage crossed the forests of the Chilean south, on snow covered roads and icy patches that with running of the kilometers went turning mud, which didn’t make the passing of the vehicles easier.

Alphand in the lead without problems

Alphand completed the 182.81 kilometers of the first selective section of the competition with a time of 2h.52m.28s., which means a 12m.01s. advantage for him in front of Brazilian Paulo Nobre (BMW X3), while the third position went to Spanish Jose Luis Monterde (Nissan Navara).

"It was a very difficult day, a stage with very slow tracks, but at the same time it was really beautiful. The roads were very hard because of the snow, the mud and the great amount of water made our task more complicated", so the leader of the rally.

The competition for the cars will continue tomorrow from the 10:30 (time of Chile) when the second stage starts. There will be a selective section of 439 kilometres finishing in the Chilean city of Concepción.

The motos could not start Stage 1

"45 minutes after the scheduled time still more than a dozen of the motos were missing from the start, that’s why we decided to cancel the special not to delay all the program of the rally", explained Erick Nevels, Clerk of the Course, about the suspension of Stage 1 of "Por Las Pampas Rally - Patagonia Atacama".

The snow that fell last night on the border area between Argentina and Chile caused a delay of several hours, that’s why several riders were unable to arrive at the start at the scheduled time.

The other news of the day was the injury of David Casteu (KTM), had a fall during the liaison which left him with a luxation in the thumb of the right hand, but he is still able to continue the rally tomorrow.

This way the competition of motos will just start up tomorrow with the second Stage, which will take the riders to the Chilean city of Concepción and will have a Selective Section of 439 kilometers.

The trucks suffered on the snow

The three trucks that participate in "Por Las Pampas Rally - Patagonia Atacama" had it really difficult to complete the first stage of the competition because they were trapped in the snow bank before the first control point of the selective section. After attending each one of the machines, the officials of the rally authorized them to continue the stage on the liaison routes until arriving in Valdivia. Tomorrow they will complete Stage 2.
