Por las Pampas: Mitsubishi confirmed for South American FIA Marathonrally.

The official Mitsubishi Motors Motor-Sports team confirmed its crews for FIA Por las Pampas Cross Country Rally - Patagonia Atacama to be run on March 7 to 16 in Argentina and Chile, the first run of the FIA Marathonrally Worldcup. Experienced drivers Luc Alphand and Joan Roma, both winners of editions of the prestigious Rally Dakar, will represent the team. These drivers, sponsored by Repsol, will compete with Mitsubishi Montero Evo units, to challenge 3100km of competition that will start in San Martín de los Andes, in the south of Argentina, and will take them all the way up to Iquique, in the north of Chile.

French Luc Alphand, nicknamed "Lucho", was one of the most famous downhill skiers ever during the 80s and 90s, with 12 victories in the World Cup and nine French national championships. Described as the best skier in the world, Alphand switched to four wheels in off road rallies in 1998, when he first took part in Rally Dakar. And after achieving important results, winning different categories and even finishing second overall in Dakar 2005, last month he conquered his best accomplishment when he became the winner of the Dakar Rally 2006. Although Alphand’s biggest passion is skiing, the French driver enjoys any sport involving high speeds. Besides skiing, biking and car racing are his other big passions.

After a brief period in football fields, Joan "Nani" Roma, devoted himself to motorcycles. He could take part in his first race by forging a friend’s license, and won it! Since then, he had unstoppably harvested excellent results, but the most coveted was lacking- the Dakar. But he finally conquered it in the 2004 edition and he became the first Spaniard to win this competition.

After taking part in seven Dakar editions with bikes, in 2005 he shifted to the four wheels. And following a sixth position in the competition, Nani added more kilometre experience to his career on a Mitsubishi, running three rounds of the World Cup, among them, Patagonia-Atacama 2005 in which he finished fourth. His first victory in cars came that same year in Baja Aragon.

Entries to take part in this 9th edition of Por las Pampas Cross Country Rally, Patagonia Atacama, will close next Tuesday February 14.
