Rainforest Challenge: News-Report from founder Luis J.A. Wee.

It has been a challenging time as we completed the first decade of the Rainforest Challenge (RFC). Our previous episode of the wettest, longest and toughest RFC of 2007 has indeed been spectacular in every sense of the word - in the action, drama, camaraderie, heroism as well as worldwide coverage from the four corners of the globe. As we embark on the first year of our second decade, I would once again like to say "thank you" to all of you for your continuous support.

You are all welcome back again for another dose of thrills and spills. For those who have not attempted it yet, well, the jungle awaits. Each year, the RFC has its own adventure story to tell, with its "twists and turns," - an experience which you will unlikely to forget for a long while. This event is not for the faint-hearted, if you wish to be part of us, be prepared in body and spirit and in vehicle preparedness (those bringing their own vehicles). Once you have landed, its living out your 4x4 adventure dreams. You'll also get to share the friendship from this "mini United Nations" of adventurers from over 30 countries.

This year's event will take place in the state of Terengganu again - "unfinished business," so to speak. The dates will be from 5 to 14 December, monsoon season of course.

For those competing this year, we are limiting the teams (each team of 2 persons in a 4x4) to a maximum of 50 - divided into 25 teams for those using the electric winch as the main recovery equipment and another 25 teams for those using the PTO winch. This time, in the Special Stages, its not the type of winch you use that counts, but its your abilities and capabilities as an off-road driver. We also open the event and route for motorcycle class (Enduro), ATV (quads) and other unique vehicles. Those who register by 30 June will qualify for Early Bird entry which carries a 20% discount from the official entry (which has remained the same since 1997) - check our website.

The route will be existing and disused logging tracks of Terengganu, north-eastern part of peninsula Malaysia - flagging off/prologue SS on 5/6 December at the town of Chukai (Kemaman) and then heading to the interiors of Hulu Terengganu and finishing at the state capital of Kuala Terengganu (14 December). Be prepared - know yourself, your co-driver, your fellow adventurers and your vehicle and face your fears in the world's most internationally represented off-road jungle event.

The RFC's "rumble in the jungle" for 2008 has already started, for more information, please contact the RFC Secretariat. Here's wishing you all the best in off-road adventure and until the next news update, cheers.
