Rally dos Sertoes: Brazils Zé Helio gives the rallyscene a new color.

Brazils Jose "Ze" Helio won on his Honda CRF 450 X the Brazil Worldcup Rally, bringing a new color on the top of the Rally podium followed by French KTM stars Cyril Despres and David Casteu. Title defender and Dakar Champion Despres could only finish second on a very technical, 10 days Rally through Brazils magnificient landscapes.

Despite strong competitors coming over the long way to brazil - besides french Cyril Despres and David Casteu, Dabrowski and Czachor from Poland, Bianchi Prata/Luis Ferreira from Portugal and Ullevalseter from Norway, also defending 450 cc World Champion Francisco Lopez from Chile hit the starting line - it was the international still unknown Jose Helio from Sao Paolo who was good for the sensation on his little Honda.

Supported by Honda Brazil, the young rider won already the prologue in the central brazilian city of Goiania. The following stages, he could keep in close contact to Dakar Champion and Sertoes title defender Cyril Depres. During the first two marathon days Helio gave all he had and built up a 19 minutes lead on Cyril Despres. Also in deep sand conditions, Helio managed to save the bike during the second marathon stages and still kept ahead of Despres in a convincing way - perfect navigation and talented riding with keeping a cool head.

The rough terrain of the first part of the ten days rally helped the physically strong rider to make up with the much bigger power of the factory KTM 690, and he finished eventually without any mistake and technical problem 16 minutes ahead of Despres and 30 ahead of Casteu at the atlantic coast finish line of the city of Salvador/Bahia.

A little sensation, after many years of total dominance of the big bore KTM factory Rally bikes. Helio won not only the Overall classification, but of course also the competitive 450 cc class. The very well organized Rally is an absolute highlight in the world cup calendar, and already second biggest event after the Dakar with 87 motorbikes on the starting line.

Additionally, it is not the most expensive one - starting fee is around 1.500 Euros, and the organizer DUNAS offers a complete transport and logistic package for overseas competitors. The well done roadbook offered all from fast sections through deserted land, enduro style tracks, rocky sections in the mountain areas and dense vegetation. A lot of sand, erosions and deep river crossings challenged all riders endurance and skills. It was already the 15th edition of the event, leading through six brazilian states and finishing after 4.776 km on the atlantic coast of Brazils northeast.

After the third world championship round, fourth classified Francisco Lopez of Chile took over the lead in the 450 class, while David Casteu is the new leader in the open class. The second half of the rally calendar are the Por Las Pampas Rally of argentina, Pharaons in Egypt and the UAE Desert Challenge.
