Rallying-Doctors to wait on Isidre Esteve Pujol surgery.

| |
| Doctors on Monday decided against immediate surgery on Spanish motorcycle rider Isidre Esteve, who suffered a serious back injury on Saturday. After a scan, doctors at the Vall d'Hebron hospital in Barcelona said they would monitor the 34-year-old's progress and make a decision on the date for the operation as the rider recovered from other injuries.
Esteve, who has competed in several Dakar rallies, came off his KTM bike while competing in the Spanish all-terrain rally championship, suffered a blow to his back and lost all feeling from the waist down. He damaged vertebrae, his chest and lungs, and broke several ribs.
At an earlier news conference, doctors said it was too early to know whether the damage would be permanent and that a decision on surgery would be taken once the results of the scan were known. "There is a risk of complication in the lungs in the next five days which could be aggravated with surgery," said Carlos Villanueva, the head of the spinal surgery unit. "Surgery is only worth risking (at this moment) if we have evidence that it can improve the injury."
