 | SA-Dakar 2012: 170 crews in cars and 75 in trucks - details from Nov. 8th.
|
Nearly two and a half months before the event starts, enrolment for the Southamerica-Dakar 2012 has now closed after the reception of 170 applications in the car category and 75 for trucks. Starters’ orders for the rally will be given on 1st January in Mar del Plata in Argentina, with Lima in Peru as the destination, after a passage through Chile.
Several weeks ago, the Dakar organisers closed applications for the rally from bike and quad riders and were forced to proceed with selections to keep in line with the format of the race.
The limits they set for the car and truck categories have now been reached, two weeks before the official closure date for applications. To ensure optimal racing comfort for the competitors and maintain the friendly nature of the event, the list of participants will not exceed 170 crews in cars and 75 in trucks.
Apart from the significant increase in numbers in relation to last year, the field will bring together a range of nationalities that is just as broad, but more balanced, signalling a genuine return en masse of European riders and drivers.
What’s more, the newcomers to the rally, who count for more than 25% of the bikers for example, will be arriving, with, for some of their number, serious ambitions. The speculation about forthcoming confrontations on the tracks will no doubt start on 8th November, with the publication of the route’s details and the full list of competitors…
