|SA-Dakar Rally: Iveco lost their way which cost them wednesday´s stagewin.|
It looked so good for Team de Rooy until the dunes came on wednesday´s SS10. At WP4 the first 4 places were for the Iveco drivers. A navigation mistake cost them the victory and gave Kamaz the opportunity to take their first victory in 2012.
Overall, Gerard de Rooy keeps enough margin and doesn’t has to worry yet. He now is 59:27 minutes ahead of his team mate Hans Stacey, who is only 4:50 minutes ahead of Ardavichues. It’s going to be a thrilling contest the coming days.
"Again a nasty day but we drove well until we - Hans, Miki and I - made the same mistake and went wrong for about 4 kilometres" said Gerard de Rooy after the stage. "Wednesday, just like tuesday, my anti roll bar supports of the front axle were bended again. So tonight again a bit of work for our mechanics, but they are quite trained now", laughs Gerard. "So there’s still hope for the next days!"
It’s never boring to report on a winning team. So let’s continue today where we stopped tuesday. Stacey was on the lead at WP1 and had 35:12 minutes on the chronometer, followed by De Rooy and quite close by Karginov and Ardavichus with their Kamaz trucks. Pep Vila passes 5th, Jo Adua and Miki Biasion started prudent but they are still very close.
The next kilometres nothing changes only Karginov, who passed 3rd at WP2, disappears and looses - probably due to a flat tyre - more than 15 minutes. At WP4 the drivers did 177 kilometre of the special and are almost halfway. It was still thrilling between the team mates Hans Stacey and Gerard de Rooy, they didn’t budge an inch. The difference at WP4 was only 1 second, this time Stacey was 1st.
After 219 kilometres of Special stage, the high, tough dunes were waiting. After 7 kilometres of dunes at WP5 it turned out that this was Gerard’s terrain, he took the lead again and was 1:55 minute ahead of Stacey, followed by Biasion at 3:09 mins and Vila at 5:38 mins. Jo Adua closes the Iveco-train, he was 7th and 17:32 minutes behind. So at this moment the team had 5 Iveco’s in the top-7...
Bad-luck pursued our leaders; Stacey, Biasion and De Rooy loosed time due to navigation mistakes. Gerard loosed almost 11 minutes with respect to the foregoing waypoint.
Now Ardavichus passed 1st with a time of 4.07.29 hours. Gerard was 4:32 minutes behind. Karginov took the 3rd place at 6:48 minutes. Biasion and Vila were 4th and 5th. Stacey was 6th but loosed quite some time and was 16:51 minutes behind, the difference between him and Ardavichus became closer.
The leader of the general rankings knew to reduce the damage at the finish line. Ardavichus passed first with a total time of 5.06.11 hours. Karginov took the 2nd place at 2.18 minutes and De Rooy only missed 2:23 minutes.
The Italian rallyrider Biasion was doing good again, just like tuesday, and finished 4th at 5:42 minutes. Pep Vila took a splendid 5th place at 11:39 minutes and De Rooy closed the Iveco-train being 6th at 14:16 minutes.
