|SA-Dakar Rally: Sand like water - Van Loon´s experience with dune fights.|
Second best Mitsubishi Racing Lancer: With the 9th place overall the Dutch duo Erik van Loon and Harmen Scholtalbers are good in the race. But especially wednesday they had "their personal fight" with a big dune. So for Wevers it was tough: "I´m finished 12, 7th, 8th... whatever. We wasted a half hour with this special dune." A short story as example for the daily fights inside the hundreds of competitors...
"It was on a steep dune, with totally soft sand" he reported. "We tried again, again and again. After the fifth try it was over, the sand too soft. So we turned left, full throttle - and some hundred meters later we landed back in the same place at the bottom of the same dune. Driving back was also no option. This was so frustating, you have no direction, no idea and energy anymore." Somewhen later, they made it.
The Dutch said, the 10th stage was a "classical Dakar stage". "Heavy and hard on all fronts. Everything was in it. It was horribly difficult to navigate. I must make my navigator Harmen Scholtalbers a great compliment. He only once was wrong with a compass course through the dunes, but otherwise flawless. Sometimes I thought we were wrong, but he was right. Well done!" In the last part of the stage, Van Loon and Scholtalbers only pushed the pedal...
