|SA-Dakar Rally: Ten Brinke and Baumel best Mitsubishi - only 3 Mitsu in T30.|
The battle of the Mitsubishi Racing Lancer - and also other Mitsubishi types - is still running. Nearly no chance to get the podium anymore, the internal battle of "the best Mitsubishi" opens.
On Friday, the Dutch Bernhard ten Brinke and his French navigator Matthieu Baumel reached the 4th position, 23:15 behind the winner Robby Gordon. Erik Wevers placed his Lancer 14th (+01:11:33), Erik van Loon finished 21st (+01:37:06) - but behind the Mitsubishi L200 Triton of the Russians Melnikov/Nikolaev (18th, +01:21:48).
In the overall rankings, Ten Brinke and Baumel hold the Mitsubishi-flag in the Top 10 - they are placed 7th with a gap of 04:14:24 hours to Stephane Peterhansel. Erik van Loon and Harmen Scholtalbers are on 15 (+09:40:19), followed by Melnikov/Nikolaev on 19 (+14:43:49). "Wevers Sport" Teamchef Erik Wevers himself is on 30th position, 20:43:58 hours after the leader.
"This was such a cool stage" reported Bernhard ten Brinke. "We drove well along with the X-raid Minis and when we were almost at the dunes we saw two Minis and some motorcycles going straight ahead. Matthieu shouted to me ´To the right, to the right - now!´ - but I said ´there are no traces´. Mathhieu shouted again: ´NOW´!!"
"So I did, and drove op the dune where he wanted to have me go and then I saw it: The traces of everyone who has ridden the wrong track! It was a total mess everywhere, Minis and motobikes everywhere around me, very chaotic. Our engine got a bit heated, but because we wanted to lose no time, we adjusted the right tire pressure, so we could drive quickly into the dunes. We passed a view Mini’s at the right, at the left, it was incredible!"
Teamchef Erik Wevers commented: "Heavy, but nice! As said by the organisation: It was a tough day. But despite that we got stuck in the deep sand we came 14th over the finish. This day was great again - just two days and then we are in Lima."
