 | SA-Dakar Rally: The start has been made - entire De Rooy Trucks in top 10.
|
The opening ceremony of the Sourthamerica Dakar 2012 took place on New Years Eve; the trucks passed the podium around 8 p.m. and were cheered to the echo by an enthusiastic crowd. It’s still a happening to experience the rally-lunacy in South America. The first Special of 57 kilometres has been driven. In the middle of the Special about 16 kilometres of dunes that were quite difficult.
Gerard de Rooy passed WP1 with the fastest time and was 48 seconds ahead of Hans Stacey and Wuf van Ginkel. At that moment Miki Biasion took the 8th place. After 57 kilometres Marcel van Vliet had taken de highest place with a total time of 37:45 minutes, Gerard de Rooy took the 2nd place, just 26 seconds behind Marcel. Miki is 4th and gained quite some time in the 2nd part, he finished just 1:19 minute behind van Vliet.
"The first 35 kilometres of the Special were exploratory for as well my navigator Hans as for myself. Later on in the dunes we also slowed down a bit as we noticed the difference between a WRC Rally and the Dakar", says a satisfied Hans "Racey" Stacey.
"The last 15 kilometres were 1 straight clay court; usually you can drive with a speed of 150 km/h but a few slow jeeps caused some delay. To top it all, Bernard pushed the 50 km/h button by mistake and again we slowed down. But we learned as a team and we can start tomorrow in an optimistic mood."
The entire Team "Petronas - Team de Rooy - Iveco" is ranked in the top-10. The first Kamaz rider, and that’s quite surprising, takes the 5th place. Mardeev finished 1:37 minutes behind the winner.
