|Sardegna Rally Race: Cyril Despres - "I crashed and banged my head"|
Tuesday morning’s special was won by Marc Coma ahead of Damien Miquel with Paulo Goncalves third and Cyril Despres 8th (at 05’53). Then this afternoon it was Alessandro Botturi who took the honours ahead Andrea Mancini with Ruben Faria third and Cyril 5th (at 02:02).
Overall Coma increases his lead with Paulo Goncalves now second at 09:36 and Cyril third at 09:48. With less than 2 minutes separating the second and the fifth placed men, the last stage of the 2013 "Sardegna Rally Race" risks being an intensely fought battle.
“Starting in 8th place the morning I was hoping to be able to use the wheel tracks in front of me to facilitate the navigation and pull back a bit of time" said Cyril Despres. "Unfortunately I crashed after just 5 or 6 kilometers and banged my head, leaving me a bit groggy. Then in the afternoon I got lost early on, once again losing time, and ended up following Botturi for most of the special."
"Ultimately I think my performance over the last two days comes down to a lack of riding time and not enough racing these last few months. With that in mind I started this rally simply with the intention of getting some hours on my new Yamaha YZF450 and little ambition regarding my final finishing position. But after the first two days I was surprised to find myself well placed overall and my ambitions shifted, which in turn showed up my lack of preparation… Now we have one last long special of 211 kilometers and I will try and refocus, ride my own race and see what happens. I let you know how it works out wednesday."
