 | Silk Way Rally: Polish Krzysztof Holowczyc to start with X-raid BMW in Russia.
|
For the first time in his rally raid career, Krzysztof Holowczyc will be one of the biggest attractions at the next Silk Way Rally. The Polish driver, who came 5th in the last Dakar alongside Belgian Jean-Marc Fortin, will once again be joining the X-Raid BMW team. Their double objective will be to shine on the routes in Russia and develop a BMW X3, with the aim of winning the next Dakar.
Stéphane Peterhansel and Leonid Novitsky will now be joined by Krzysztof Holowczyc, when the X-Raid team arrives at the starting line as favourite for the next Silk Way Rally between Moscow and Sotchi. The Pole is delighted about this project.
"I am extremely pleased to be working with the X-Raid team. Only a few days ago, I signed a contract in order to take part in the Silk Way, the Dakar and test runs. Next Tuesday, I will be travelling to Morocco with the team so that we can work on developing the car and particularly the suspension. Then we can begin to concentrate on the Silk Way," says the former MEP.
Will he be aiming to win a rally, in which he is competing for the first time? "I am a competitor. Sooner or later, I will fight to win. But first I want to test the car and drive intelligently, after which I will probably move to the attack."
The Silk Way routes, and particularly at the start of the race, may well be ideal for the Polish driver, who is a former WRC rally driver. Whatever happens, Holowczyc sees the rally as a step towards his main goal: the Dakar. "For several years, I’ve thought of nothing but the Dakar. To win it would be a dream, which is actually beginning to take shape."
In order to achieve this, the driver will need a perfect car. "In many ways, the X3 is almost perfect already. The engine is superb, as well as the brakes, which we have made more reliable. The car is solid. But, at the end of the day, the Volkswagen was faster at the last Dakar. So we still have our work cut out."
