Transiberico: Carlos Sainz win for the first time in a FIA Marathonrally.

Carlos Sousa in the podium between the two Mitsubishi Spaniard Carlos Sainz and his co-driver Michel Perin, driving a VW Race Touareg, won the Rali Vodafone Transibérico, after three days of complete domination in the Portuguese tracks. Big temperatures almost put Sainz "KO", but at least VW could open the champagne celebrating the second win in this event. It was really impressive the way as the ex-World Rally Champion, Carlos Sainz, dominated all the great Cross Country Rally Specialists, in the opening round of the FIA Cross Country Championship.

Starting with a win in the Super Special Stage, held near Mafra, the Spaniard took the lead and start the first leg opening the track. At this time the Mitsubishi guys tried to catch him, but the Pajeros had little problems, as well as some punctures, so Sainz could maintain his lead and even increase it, in the end of the second leg. The third day, was really dramatic for him; Lots of heat inside the Volkswagen, and a problem with the water supply system, almost made him lost his senses, and it was necessary that Michel Perin "took the wheel" to achieve Beja in the end of the third leg.

"It was really one of the harder races of my life. It was so much heat inside the car, and I couldn’t drink for almost 100 Km, so I’ve arrived really tired. I was once like this in Turkey - I think a little better - so I do remember very well the sensations. In the last day we were slower, because I was noticed that Joan was also loosing time. Even with these problems I enjoyed the race and to return to Portugal. The car was really fine, with no problems than a little "vibration" in the first day. We will continue our tests to
get more and more evolution in all aspects, but as you can see, we are now very competitive in all tracks."

After Joan Roma - who was the most dangerous of the Mitsubishi team, but again finish second - a podium also to Carlos Sousa, de more and more used to the VW "way of driving", as all of us can see by regarding the results of this event.

Alphand had many problems this time, and took only the 4th place in front of the first private team - Dessoude Competition - with Filipe Campos leading our "national entries" with a great result (5th) in front of Helder Oliveira (Toyota) and Nuno Inocêncio, with is Mitsubishi. In the Portuguese Championship, remarks to Miguel Barbosa, who abandon in the first day, but was really the fastest after that. The Dessoude’s driver has now a comfortable lead in the championship, so he accomplish completely all he wanted for this race.

During four days, almost 100 teams fight for the best result in the Rali Vodafone Transibérico, in an hard and competitive event which was surely the best to start the new FIA Cross Country Rally Cup.
